Itomic at DrupalCon London

Drupalcon London is now two weeks and a long weekend ago now, but the memory, information, advice and opinion still remains.

The difference between DrupalDownUnder in January to this months DrupalCon is significant particularly in the number of attendants. A sell out of 1,700 tickets, a release of more tickets and subsequent use of overspill facilities shows the strength and following Drupal has in Europe. In fact Dries Buytaert mentioned in his opening keynote speech that Europe has more Drupal sites than North America.

Once again, I am struck by the sense of community that exists with the Drupal events. Drupal succeeds and thrives because a community of developers use, improve and donate their knowledge to create modules.

I enjoyed the availability of Drupal personalities at the event. Having the opportunity to ‘talk turkey’ with people such as Kevin Libby and Erich Ludwig from Acquia, or Jeff Robbins from Lullabot is great.

As a non-developer cog in the Itomic engine, my particular favourite session of the conference was by Jennifer Hols and Benjamin Koether. They manage Drupal projects in Canada and surprisingly (tongue firmly in cheek) come across all the same challenges as I have whilst managing projects in Cambridge and Perth.

Snippets of advice such as ‘pushing back on clients who want items unique to them – push them toward standard features’ is a one line comment at a seminar but excellent business sense.

Tom Standage’s keynote of use of Social Media in history was wonderful, Martin Luther’s traffic stats 1516 to 1546 was inspired.

As a final note, I know we are all grateful that Dries’ near death experience whilst travelling on the top of a London Double Decker bus whilst heading towards a low bridge ended without incident.
